This morning we challenged ourselves to edit the morning message for fully missing 'sneaky, sly y' words. We had literacy centers and guided reading, then hunted for word wall words in our "January" poem. Phys ed was a ton of fun with our mat equipment! After recess we watched the story, "Squirrel's New Year Resolution," to begin inspiring our writing. After a sharing circle, we wrote about memories from 2017, and things we hope to try or resolve to do in 2018. Our afternoon was full of math -- we practiced our one more, one less, two more, two less facts with ten frame cards, playing Around the World, and learning a very fun new game called Bump. After singing about snowflakes in music, we finished our day with a little math pre-assessment, showing how we can express one more, one less facts with number equations.

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books! This week we are focusing on "sneaky sly y:"
happy funny family by my very many why try
Please and Thank You!
- Thank you for returning school Library books for Wednesday (our scheduled weekly exchange time is Wednesday afternoon).
- Please return field trip forms for Friday. *We noticed a typo on the parent letter -- the field trip is on Tuesday, January 16, not Wednesday as is written.*
- Please start thinking about a recipe that is a tradition in your family (could be cultural, or just something special to/enjoyed by your family). More info to come!
Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! Just let me know the day before, please. This role will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students
- Due to an exciting guest speaker opportunity, our next Fish Creek ridge walk will be moved (tentatively, weather dependent) to Tuesday, January 23 at 1:00 pm. We would appreciate 3 volunteers joining us on this leisurely walk to observe seasonal winter changes.
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
Save the Date:
Grade one will be enjoying a Family Traditions Brunch on Friday, February 9. Families are welcome to attend! More information to come soon!

Daily Challenge
Can you make up a math story to go with the "two less" number sentence: 14 - 2 = 12?
*(Thank you to the comment for catching my initial error -- I'm afraid that's the result of pretty bad pregnancy insomnia!!!)
