This morning we edited our wacky message for mixed-up /oy/ and /oi/ words as well as backward letters. We had 3 rounds of literacy centers today since we are away tomorrow, and continued our "Animal Ninja Warrior" fitness stations in phys ed. In the afternoon the students learned a song about seeds in music, then we continued our math, working with balancing equations. We finished our day with a superstorm learning about how potatoes are grown and turned into products, in preparation for tomorrow's Grow Calgary field trip.
Grow Calgary: Thursday
We are excited to return to the GrowCalgary urban farm this coming Thursday! Notices went home last week, but consent forms were already sent way back in September, as they covered both dates.
Please send your child prepared for a day outside. If the current forecast holds up (cloudy, but rain holding off until late afternoon), we will want hats, sunscreen, and bug repellent. Layers and comfortable, closed-toed shoes that are okay to get dirty are recommended. We have been encouraged to bring plenty of water to drink! If possible, please send your child with gardening gloves. I am told we will get to plant potatoes!
Sight Words
We are focusing on words that contain /oi/ and /oy/
boy choice noise enjoy toy
Mail Pockets
- No new mail went home today
- Students did bring home their French booklets to practice for their Iris videos
Please and Thank You
- June 14 is quickly approaching! We are hoping to have 8 - 10 of our fabulous volunteers join us on our Urban Community Tour. This exciting day exploring Calgary's landmarks and local history is made much smoother with a small adult-child ratio, and is always one of the most memorable highlights of the grade ones' year. We hope you can come with us! :)
Thank you for being so giving of your time! Please email Elysa or Melissa if you are interested and available for any of these experiences.
Library Book Return
It's already that time of year again! Please return any outstanding library books so that Mrs. Cornford can take inventory as the school year wraps up. The first class with all of their books returned will win a prize!
An important message from Mme Pallesen:
Next Tuesday in French class, students will be making videos for IRIS. We have been practicing the following:
- · Saying hello (bonjour, salut)
- · Introducing myself (je m'appelle ...)
- · Counting up to 29 (some students can count higher)
- · Body Parts
- · Animals
- · Saying goodbye (la fin, au revoir)
Tuesday, June 6th is Bike to School Day.
Take a peek at the map for meet up places to start your ride to school with a group.
Yoga will start at 8:15 in the field. Find an active way to get to school this day! Click on this image for a map of drop-off locations.
Math Practice at Home
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, near-doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!? We are also working with fact families -- try drawing 2 cards (the addends), then seeing how fast you can write 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences for that family of numbers.
