This morning our class got to watch science videos with Mrs. Hamilton's class while the musical theatre participants performed at the Volunteer Tea. We estimated and grouped the 'drops' in our class bucket, played our new math game, "Opposite Facts," again, and had a poetry party to revisit old favourites. After music we finished this round of literacy centers and guided reading, then went outside to enjoy the weather for phys ed.
It was so nice to see many of you at the Volunteer Tea! I am so grateful for the incomparable volunteer support we enjoy at this school. Thank you for all that you do!!!
Sight Words
We are focusing on words that end in -ng.
who what where when why which how
Mail Pockets
- No new mail went home (unless your child did not receive a lavender GrowCalgary field trip notice yesterday, in which case it came home today)
Please and Thank You
- We are excited to return to GrowCalgary on Thursday, June 1 to help with planting, weeding, and other helping jobs. Notices went home yesterday, but consent forms were already sent way back in September, as they covered both dates. We are hoping for 2 more volunteers to join us for this fun day in the dirt!
- June 14 is quickly approaching! We are hoping to have 8 - 10 of our fabulous volunteers join us on our Urban Community Tour. This exciting day exploring Calgary's landmarks and local history is made much smoother with a small adult-child ratio, and is always one of the most memorable highlights of the grade ones' year. We hope you can come with us! :)
Thank you for being so giving of your time! Please email Elysa or Melissa if you are interested and available for any of these experiences.
Library Book Return
It's already that time of year again! Please return any outstanding library books so that Mrs. Cornford can take inventory as the school year wraps up. The first class with all of their books returned will win a prize!
Tuesday, June 6th is Bike to School Day.
Take a peek at the map for meet up places to start your ride to school with a group.
Yoga will start at 8:15 in the field. Find an active way to get to school this day! Click on this image for a map of drop-off locations.
Math Practice at Home
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, near-doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!? We are also working with fact families -- try drawing 2 cards (the addends), then seeing how fast you can write 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences for that family of numbers.

Daily Challenge
We are really enjoying our new math game, Opposite Facts! Using the two addends, 5 and 7, can you write an addition fact and a story to go with it? What might be an 'opposite' subtraction fact and a story that shows it?
