After editing the missing word wall words from our morning message, we took a look back at our recent journal entries to edit them and add details. After a whole group Author's Chair session, we broke into small groups to give and receive feedback ("stars and wishes") to help improve our writing even more. After recess we did mystery back-printing to review our letter formation and Sound City phonic chunks, then had fun playing Don't Throw Your Junk in My Backyard (badminton edition!) in phys ed. We worked on showing sums as doubles and near-doubles on our rekenreks in math. In the afternoon the students had French. In social studies the grade ones then made lovely, thoughtful maps of their families in their visual journals that showed how their family members help them and likewise. After all of their hard work, the students were rewarded with free center time at the end of the day!
Sight Words
We are reviewing previously learned phonic "chunks" and sight words.
Math Facts
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!?

Daily Challenge
We worked in small groups to give and receive feedback as writers. What feedback would you give yourself as a writer? What "stars" do you think you are doing well? What wishes do you have to help improve even further?
