We had a terrifically math-filled day. First we went through and learned how to do our new "Sometimes Sweets" centers that help us to learn shape and space math outcomes. We get to pretend we are running a candy and sweet shop out of our classroom with activities that include measurement, shape attributes, grouping and estimation. Then, we played "sumtastic" in pairs to practice a 'branching' method of adding multiple numbers and using mental math strategies. After recess we learned about the 7 traits of living things, including a new song to help us remember. We also observed our plants, which are growing at a pretty amazing rate! Phys ed was a lot of fun, with a new version of Restaurant Wars tag. In the afternoon the students had computer activities in French, then we enjoyed a round of our math centers. We finished our day with reading time to explore fairy tales (and twisted takes on them), to help us prepare for tomorrow's buddy writing activity.
Mail Pockets
No new mail went home today, but I just got THE LAST (!!!) monthly calendar in my mail box, so you can expect those tomorrow.
Please and Thank You / Volunteer Opportunities
***The grade one Urban Community Tour is fast approaching on Tuesday, June 14. We are hoping for 3-5 more volunteers to make it as smooth an experience as possible. It is always a highlight for grade one students and parents, so we hope you can join us! Please email myself or Tara if you can join us -- transportation will be provided.
Milk
Please note that the last day students will receive milk will be Thursday, June 2.
Library Update
This will be our last week to sign out books -- our class is visiting the library on Wednesday. Our school librarian, Mrs. Cornford, asks that all books be returned the week of June 6th to start organizing for the end of year. The first classes in Div I and Div II to return all of their books will receive a reward!
Fort McMurray Book Drive
The families of Beacon Hill School in Fort McMurray have lost everything. Their principal, Garrett Tebay and her librarian, have asked for our support. They would like to help their families rebuild their home libraries. Prince of Wales can help!! Clean out your bookshelves, order some new books from Scholastic or stop by your local bookstore. Please drop off NEW or Gently Used books at the school. Mrs. Tebay will pick them up when she is in Calgary and deliver them. Thank you for your help!

Daily Challenge -- two, in case you missed yesterday and wanted to try!
We learned the 7 traits of living things: they breathe, move, grow, need food/water, react, give off waste, and reproduce. Can you name 4 living things, and 4 non-living things?
We learned a new 'branching' strategy to find the sum of more than two addends. We look for easier mental math sums first, like doubles, near-doubles, or 'ten buddies,' then continue on with fewer numbers to add. If you rolled a 5, 4, 4, and 2, how would you find the sum? What might you add up first?
