We started our day with an assembly hearing one of our grade five students give an incredibly powerful and moving TedX Talk about her brother, in recognition of Rare Chromosome Disorder Week. After editing our morning message for word wall words, we had some organization, "Ketchup and Must-do" time for desks and math problems. After recess we learned and talked about characteristics of living vs. non-living things, and shared a beautiful book, "Are Trees Alive." We played a bonus points version of Critter Tag in phys ed! Fun! In the afternoon we learned a new strategy -- branching -- for adding multiple numbers, and a game, "Sumtastic," to practice it. The students earned a little quiet 'pickle' time before music, and we finished our day working on some absolutely stunning Kandinsky art with 2-D geometric shapes.

Please and Thank You / Volunteer Opportunities
***The grade one Urban Community Tour will be on Tuesday, June 14. This is a while away, but we are hoping for 7 more volunteers to make it as smooth an experience as possible. It is always a highlight for grade one students and parents, so we hope you can join us!
Milk
Please note that the last day students will receive milk will be Thursday, June 2.
Library Update
This will be our last week to sign out books -- our class is visiting the library on Wednesday. Our school librarian, Mrs. Cornford, asks that all books be returned the week of June 6th to start organizing for the end of year. The first classes in Div I and Div II to return all of their books will receive a reward!
Fort McMurray Book Drive
The families of Beacon Hill School in Fort McMurray have lost everything. Their principal, Garrett Tebay and her librarian, have asked for our support. They would like to help their families rebuild their home libraries. Prince of Wales can help!! Clean out your bookshelves, order some new books from Scholastic or stop by your local bookstore. Please drop off NEW or Gently Used books at the school. Mrs. Tebay will pick them up when she is in Calgary and deliver them. Thank you for your help!

Daily Challenge
We learned a new 'branching' strategy to find the sum of more than two addends. We look for easier mental math sums first, like doubles, near-doubles, or 'ten buddies,' then continue on with fewer numbers to add. If you rolled a 5, 4, 4, and 2, how would you find the sum? What might you add up first?
