We read and 'fed' our /wh/ words to the word wall monster, then edited our morning message without peeking at them! We read our /wh/ "All About You" poem in different funny voices, and hunted for word wall words. In science we learned about the food chain and classifications of living things, and began an experiment to better understand how plants get nutrients from the soil. We placed cut gerbera daisies in cups of water dyed different colours, and most students predicted that it will change the colour of the petals. We'll check back and learn more on Tuesday! We worked on defensive skills in basketball and continued our fact family stories in math. In the afternoon the students got computer time in French, then we spent the rest of the day with a science guest expert! Dr. Flanagan (who happens to be Nolan's mom!) is a biologist who studies living things in water environments. She brought daphnia, a microscopic creature, for us to observe and discuss. They were fascinating! We went outside to enjoy Outdoor Classroom day and to sketch examples of living and non-living things.
Sight Words
We are focusing on words that end in -ng.

- The Grade Ones will enjoy will learn about how plants and animals in the natural world thrive together during our Fish Creek Park program on Wednesday, May 24. We are in need of a couple more volunteers for this day full of science and fresh air.
- We are excited to return to GrowCalgary on Thursday, June 1 to help with planting, weeding, and other helping jobs. We will be looking for 4 - 5 volunteers to join us for this fun day in the dirt!
- While we realize June 14 is further down the road, we are hoping to have 8 - 10 of our fabulous volunteers join us on our Urban Community Tour. This exciting day exploring Calgary's landmarks and local history is made much smoother with a small adult-child ratio, and is always one of the most memorable highlights of the grade ones' year. We hope you can come with us! :)
Thank you for being so giving of your time! Please email Elysa or Melissa if you are interested and available for any of these experiences.
Math Practice at Home
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, near-doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!? We are also working with fact families -- try drawing 2 cards (the addends), then seeing how fast you can write 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences for that family of numbers.
Upcoming Dates
May 24 - Fish Creek Park "Thriving Together" program (5 volunteers requested, please!)
May 26 - Volunteer Tea (8:00 am) -- we hope to see you there!
June 1 - Grow Calgary volunteering: spring edition! (5 volunteers requested, please!)
June 14 - Urban Community Tour (8-10 volunteers requested, please!)
Daily Challenge
What was the most interesting thing you learned about living things and daphnia today?
Pick any living thing... how does it show the characteristics of living things? How does it move? Grow? Reproduce? React to a stimulus? Give off waste? Take in energy? Breathe?
