This morning we edited our message for missing /wh/ chunks and finished up our past round of literacy centers. Then we spent some time exploring /wh/ and question words in videos and our new poem. After recess the students used /wh/ question words to write me interview questions in their journals so I can answer them back! We played "Pollination Palooza" again in phys ed, and played a fact families board game in math to help us practice our efficiency. In the afternoon the students also had French, and finished the day with PoWer Hour.

Please and Thank You
- Please return volunteer tea RSVPs as soon as possible. We are so grateful for all the ways you contribute your school and hope you can make it!
- The Grade Ones will enjoy will learn about how plants and animals in the natural world thrive together during our Fish Creek Park program on Wednesday, May 24. We are hoping for a couple more volunteers for this day full of science and fresh air.
- We are excited to return to GrowCalgary on Thursday, June 1 to help with planting, weeding, and other helping jobs. We will be looking for 4 - 5 volunteers to join us for this fun day in the dirt!
- While we realize June 14 is further down the road, we are hoping to have 8 - 10 of our fabulous volunteers join us on our Urban Community Tour. This exciting day exploring Calgary's landmarks and local history is made much smoother with a small adult-child ratio, and is always one of the most memorable highlights of the grade ones' year. We hope you can come with us! :)
Thank you for being so giving of your time! Please email Elysa or Melissa if you are interested and available for any of these experiences.
Math Practice at Home
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, near-doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!? We are also working with fact families -- try drawing 2 cards (the addends), then seeing how fast you can write 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences for that family of numbers.
Upcoming Dates
May 24 - Fish Creek Park "Thriving Together" program (5 volunteers requested, please!)
May 26 - Volunteer Tea (8:00 am) -- we hope to see you there!
June 1 - Grow Calgary volunteering: spring edition! (5 volunteers requested, please!)
June 14 - Urban Community Tour (8-10 volunteers requested, please!)
Daily Challenge
We learned that journalists use /wh/ question words to ask interview questions. Using /wh/ question words, can you write 3 interview questions for a member of your family?
