After editing our message for many missing /wh/ and /aw/ words, we had literacy centers and guided reading. We acted out and colour coded the punctuation in our 'All About You' /wh/ poem, and did Author's Chair feedback to help us edit and add to our long weekend journal writing. We learned and practiced techniques for shooting the basketball in phys ed, and learned a fun new math game to help us practice reciprocal ('opposite') facts. In the afternoon the Musical Theatre group performed at an assembly, then we reflected on our favourite Fish Creek memories in our visual journals. As a treat, the students got time to explore our online math and literacy activities during computers.
Hope to see you at tomorrow's volunteer tea! :)

Mail Pockets
- Field trip notices (lavender) for next week's Grow Calgary trip went home today! Consent forms were filled out back in September, which covered both dates.
Please and Thank You
- We are excited to return to GrowCalgary on Thursday, June 1 to help with planting, weeding, and other helping jobs. We are looking for 4 volunteers to join us for this fun day in the dirt!
- June 14 is quickly approaching! We are hoping to have 8 - 10 of our fabulous volunteers join us on our Urban Community Tour. This exciting day exploring Calgary's landmarks and local history is made much smoother with a small adult-child ratio, and is always one of the most memorable highlights of the grade ones' year. We hope you can come with us! :)
Thank you for being so giving of your time! Please email Elysa or Melissa if you are interested and available for any of these experiences.
Math Practice at Home
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, near-doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!? We are also working with fact families -- try drawing 2 cards (the addends), then seeing how fast you can write 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences for that family of numbers.
Upcoming Dates
May 26 - Volunteer Tea (8:00 am) -- we hope to see you there!
June 1 - Grow Calgary volunteering: spring edition! (5 volunteers requested, please!)
June 14 - Urban Community Tour (8-10 volunteers requested, please!)
Daily Challenge
We really enjoyed today's math game, Opposite Facts! Using the two addends, 5 and 7, can you write an addition fact and a story to go with it? What might be an 'opposite' subtraction fact and a story that shows it?
