This morning we edited our wacky Wednesday message for backward letters and silly-fied /wh/ words. We started our new round of literacy centers and guided reading, then exchanged our library books. After recess we reviewed fact families as stories using the cuisenaire rods to 'act' them out, and began writing and illustrating our own fact family math stories. In phys ed we reviewed dribbling skills and played 2 games, 'Trap' and 'On the Track' to practice control. In the afternoon the students sang "Tony Chestnut" in music, then we spent the rest of the afternoon on a pastel and watercolour art project inspired by Edvard Munch's "The Sun" mural.

- We are excited to return to GrowCalgary on Thursday, June 1 to help with planting, weeding, and other helping jobs. We will be looking for 4 - 5 volunteers to join us for this fun day in the dirt!
- While we realize June 14 is further down the road, we are hoping to have 8 - 10 of our fabulous volunteers join us on our Urban Community Tour. This exciting day exploring Calgary's landmarks and local history is made much smoother with a small adult-child ratio, and is always one of the most memorable highlights of the grade ones' year. We hope you can come with us! :)
Thank you for being so giving of your time! Please email Elysa or Melissa if you are interested and available for any of these experiences.
Math Practice at Home
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, near-doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!? We are also working with fact families -- try drawing 2 cards (the addends), then seeing how fast you can write 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences for that family of numbers.
