This morning we edited our morning message and acted out the punctuation in our "Living or Non-Living" poem. Then we got to meet our new friends coming from the community of Legacy next year! We played a name game, then played word connector to get to know each other a bit better. Thank you, grade ones, for being friendly and welcoming! We went out for recess with them, then had 2 rounds of literacy centers. In phys ed we played a science game to help us prepare for next week's field trip: Pollination Palooza. It's a tag game involving flowers luring butterflies with nectar, butterflies helping the flowers pollinate, and predator crab spiders waiting to feast! In the afternoon we had a great session with our school's resident artist, Mike Grills, to help us create our own characters for a whole-school yearbook project. We learned the most important thing when creating characters is: "Weirder is better!" In math we used cuisenaire rods to visually reinforce fact families, especially the correlation between math stories and number sentences. We finished our day reading "Last Stop on Market Street," about a boy and his Nana who volunteer at a soup kitchen, then wrote a thank you letter to our volunteer guides at the Drop-In Centre.

Please and Thank You
- Please return volunteer tea RSVPs as soon as possible. We are so grateful for all the ways you contribute your school and hope you can make it!
- The Grade Ones will enjoy will learn about how plants and animals in the natural world thrive together during our Fish Creek Park program on Wednesday, May 24. We are hoping for a couple more volunteers for this day full of science and fresh air.
- We are excited to return to GrowCalgary on Thursday, June 1 to help with planting, weeding, and other helping jobs. We will be looking for 4 - 5 volunteers to join us for this fun day in the dirt!
- While we realize June 14 is further down the road, we are hoping to have 8 - 10 of our fabulous volunteers join us on our Urban Community Tour. This exciting day exploring Calgary's landmarks and local history is made much smoother with a small adult-child ratio, and is always one of the most memorable highlights of the grade ones' year. We hope you can come with us! :)
Thank you for being so giving of your time! Please email Elysa or Melissa if you are interested and available for any of these experiences.
Math Practice at Home
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, near-doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!? We are also working with fact families -- try drawing 2 cards (the addends), then seeing how fast you can write 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences for that family of numbers.

Daily Challenge
We learned about creating characters with illustrator Mike Grills. What weird and creative creature or thing would you turn yourself into? (Remember, it can be a combination of other creatures or things!).
