After editing our morning message for missing /ow/ and /ou/ words and making the number 6 as many ways as we could, we continued with literacy centers and guided reading. The students edited a sample of writing that was missing the beginning and end from its "sandwich," then applied it to polish their own writing after recess. We practiced passing skills for Newcomb Ball in phys ed and had a blast acting our our "Great OW/OU Storm" poem. In the afternoon the students reviewed body parts in French. In math we played Sumtastic to practice efficiently using mental math strategies, then the students had another Power Market challenge -- to shop a vegetarian meal for me that still has 4 food groups, with a budget of $9.00! We began learning the sing-along song for Music Monday to end our day.

Math Facts
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!?

Communities helping Communities
Grade 2’s have been learning about communities across Canada. As we explored ways of life in the Arctic, we were shocked to learn that a fire had devastated the community school in Kugaaruk, Nunavut. Not just a center for education, the school served as the community center with the arena, breakfast and lunch program, and special events. Grade 2’s at Prince of Wales have banded together, and following the design thinking process, explored how to best support this community.
To support Kugaaruk School, Grade 2’s will host Intermural Floor Hockey in the gym from April 10th- April 20th from12:00-12:30PM and welcome all donations (suggested donation is $2). Ms. Konno will be creating heartfelt cards with students in Room 9. The Grade 2’s also welcome cash donations in support of the community of Kugaaruk. **Grade one intermural hockey is on Monday, April 10th.**
Cash donations will be accepted from April 3rd to April 21st. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. We thank you in advance for your support!

Daily Challenge
Try playing Sumtastic at home and teach your family! You could use dice (or even 1, rolling it multiple times), or pull playing cards from a deck. Start with 3 rolls/cards and work your way up if you need more of a challenge. Look for facts you know first, like doubles, ten buddies, one more or one less. Can you explain your thinking process?
