We began our day editing a very wacky Wednesday message -- all of the vowels in our sight words were mixed up! We hunted for rhymes in our poems, and practiced printing the flagpole letters (l, i, t, j, and k) with our fingers in plates of salt. We played "Mystery Word," a body-spelling game, to help us practice our word wall words, then went to see Mrs. Cornford to re-familiarize ourselves with the library. We just got our cards at the end of the day, and will get to sign out books next Wednesday. In math we journaled as many ways as we could to show 3, and went outside for phys ed to enjoy some sunshine and 'silly walks!' In the afternoon the students had music, then we 'superstormed' with our other grade one friends to learn about the parts of our brain. We learned that we need to take slow breaths to calm down the amygdala (our brain "body guard") when it wants to fight, flee, or freeze! The students finished their day creating their visual journal collage covers. Thank you for sending the images to make them beautiful and unique!

Daily Challenge
We learn about mindfulness to help us feel calm and ready to learn -- today we learned about the parts of our brain. The prefrontal cortex is our "wise leader," who helps us make good decisions and solve problems. The hippocampus is the "saver of memories." The amygdala is "the body guard," who tells us to fight, freeze, or flee when it senses we are in danger.
What is your favourite way to calm down your amygdala?
