This morning we edited the very wacky spellings of word wall words in our message. We were excited to use salt plates for tactile printing practice of the flagpole letters, l, i, j, t, and k. We played charades to act out words that start with the flagpole letters. In poetry we learned how to be word detectives, hunting for word wall words in "All of Us." In phys ed we enjoyed learning a very fun game called Restaurant Wars. We discussed and practiced a picture walk reading strategy, where we first try and predict the story using only illustrations, then go back and read it. This is a great comprehension strategy to practice during your home reading! We were VERY excited to meet our grade four buddies today; we got to know each other while we drew each other's portraits. In the afternoon we practiced subitizing in five and ten frames, and played a partner math game called Subitizing Snap. The students had to guess why my "magic numbers" are meaningful to me, then wrote and drew in their math journals about their own magic numbers. In our math journals we write to a martian named Mathley, who teaches at the University of Mars and is studying how earthlings learn math. We can't wait for him to write back to us!
Reminder -- tomorrow is photo day! :)

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a small set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Often there will be a focus of a specific phonic pattern. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books!
