Highlights of the Day
The grade ones sure looked dapper today for photos! We began our morning editing the wacky message for long squealy 'ee,' 'ea,' and 'e' chunks before getting called down to do our class pictures. We exchanged our library books and played with the "-an" family. After recess we began our new literacy centers, and did some printing before some outside phys ed time. It was exciting to do GoNoodle with grade six helpers while the teachers had their staff photo! In the afternoon we had PoWer Hour, then finished our day with a math craft. Thank you VERY much to our brave volunteers who helped us bead our rekenreks! They look pretty spiffy and will be very helpful for our number sense! Hope you all enjoyed a very happy Thanksgiving weekend! This morning we each added some new words to our personal word walls. We will build up this collection of helpful words based on what we individually try out and use the most in our writing. The students wrote about their long weekends, and they should be very proud of their work!! We had our second session of "Who Do You Tell," and learned about emotion/feeling words. The students brought their overview and feelings match-up home in their backpacks. We played a fun game, "Squirrels and Nuts" in phys ed. In the afternoon the students did some work around birthdays and numbers in their French "cahiers." We learned a new sound chunk today -- ee and ea, which make a "squealy e" sound. This will be part of this week's literacy centers, which we reviewed today. We got our Home Reading bags today and went to pick out books that are just right for us. After some sorting sets in math, we finished our day with a little sunshine outside while it lasts! *Please remember -- tomorrow is school photo day! If you have not already, please bring the small form that went home last week to pick your child's background and pose.* Room 7 Communication / Contact Our classroom coordinator this year is Tara Walter. This morning we visited our word wall to add the "th" chunk to our Digraph Delivery railroad on the Sound City map! Have some fun hunting for 'th' in your reading at home -- the grade ones are getting very good at spotting it! We spent the morning working on our Thankful Trees art, as the students were excited to bring them home as a gift. We also had French and learned some helpful manners words: "merci beaucoup" and "de rien!" Of course, there was the weekly Grade One dance party to shake loose and have fun, and we finished our morning celebrating another friend's birthday! What are some of your favourite Thanksgiving or fall traditions? Highlights of the Day
This morning we looked at photos from yesterday's walk and talked about whether our predictions were "confirmations" or "misconceptions." The students drew and wrote about their fall changes observations. The students did a beautiful job drawing autumn trees made by tracing their hands. We learned that blending colours creates interest in our artwork. The students had their fourth round of this week's literacy centers, and we are proud that they are growing more independent during this time. For phys ed, we went outside and played follow the leader to move around the field collecting leaves for our art. After lunch would usually be music, but our school had an evacuation practice to St. Phillip down the road. The grade ones did an absolutely AMAZING job walking quietly, calmly, and safely. Well done! We finished our day working on leaf rubbings and painting for our Thankful Trees, and celebrated a friend's birthday! It was a very busy day! We edited our morning message for wacky, mixed-up vowels and finished up our fall walk predictions before exchanging library books. After recess the grade ones had their third round of literacy centers, including hunting for "th" chunk words and building words that are part of the "-at" family. We started working on a Thanksgiving art project and played a more challenging version of our train track dribbling game in phys ed. In the afternoon the students were very excited for their first PoWer Hour! After exploring a variety of exciting interests in PoWer Hour, we zoomed off to our first Ridge Walk to scope out seasonal changes! We sure lucked out with an incredibly sunny autumn afternoon! Thank you very much to our many Fun Lunch, field trip, and in-class volunteers who helped us out today! Evacuation Drill Tomorrow Prince of Wales will be having a whole-school evacuation drill tomorrow after lunch. It will be very much like a fire drill, but we will be walking to St. Phillip school nearby to practice this emergency procedure. We will prepare the students and answer their questions in the morning, but please feel free to discuss with your child that this is just a drill to keep us safe, and nothing to be worried about. Think about what you predicted you would see... did anything surprise you? Highlights of the Day
This morning we edited our message for short vowels and the "th" chunk. My family came to meet the students before our assembly, where the Canadian Family Teacher Awards came to present us with our giant cheque! We learned a new 'th' poem about mice, and hunted for the 'th' words in it. After recess we played "Race to 20" with the ten frames, then had our second round of literacy centers with the neighbour class. In phys ed we practiced kicking with our in-step to play a version of "Keep it Moving." In the afternoon the students counted all the way up to 20 in French! We super stormed with our neighbour class to prepare for tomorrow's walk to the Ridge. We read a very silly autumn book, "Fall Mixed Up!" and made predictions about what we would see tomorrow. The students wrote and drew about their predictions. Remember, we also have fun lunch and library exchange tomorrow! Field Trip Tomorrow! Please make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing for tomorrow's Ridge Walk. Please also pack an easy-to-eat (low-mess) snack that the students can pack and walk with to take to the Ridge. Thank you! Highlights of the Day
This morning we edited our message for short vowels, which are getting a little easier for us every day! We learned about the 'th' sound chunk, which will be the first addition to our Sound City map! We explored a new poem, "This and That," full of this "rude tongue-stick-out" sound, hunting for 'th' chunks. We learned how to do each of the literacy centers that will become part of our daily routine, and in the afternoon got to try out our first round with our neighbour class. The Who Do You Tell presenters came to us and the students learned about how they are in charge of their bodies. They brought home information and a drawing that they did from the program in their backpacks. In phys ed we practiced soccer dribbling the ball with control, trying to keep it on the "train tracks" (gymnasium lines). The students learned some fun variations to "Wheels on the Bus" in music. We have a class full of wonderful singers! During snack we shared a book called, "Thanks for Thanksgiving." The students learned a new song, "Thank You" for our poetry and songs book, and made up actions to it. We brainstormed all the many things for which we are thankful... which will become part of an art project this week! Mail Pockets - Mail pockets did not go home today -- please check tomorrow as we are expecting to receive Picture Day info to send home. Please and Thank You - Thank you for so helpfully sending in cardboard! Our very patient parent volunteer helped turn them into bases for next week's rekenreks. - Please return all coupon book packages (whether ordering or not) at your earliest convenience. - Please return Scholastic orders by Friday, October 9 if interested in ordering - Please consider contributing phone books, if available! Volunteer Opportunities - October scholastic flyers arrived -- if you are interested in sorting and stapling, please let me know (can be done at home) - We will be crafting rekenrek math tools next Wednesday afternoon (the 14th) at 2. Lots of fun, but involving lots of small beads, so an extra volunteer would be most welcome! Assembly On Tue. Oct. 6 at 8:45am our school will be holding an assembly. I was very fortunate to be one of the winners of the Canadian Family Teacher Awards from last year! Thank you, because it was a whole-community effort to vote in the final 'round!' They will be here to present the cheque for the money I have won for our school. We have already put some of the money to good use with the purchase of a set of yoga mats for student and staff use. Library Books Our class visits the Learning Commons on Wednesday mornings. If your child would like to exchange their current book for a new one, please return by Wednesday. Upcoming Dates - Oct. 7 -- Fish Creek Ridge Walk (2:00 pm); First Fun Lunch! - Oct. 8 -- Home Reading literacy presentation (5:30) - Oct. 9 -- Scholastic orders due, if interested - Oct. 14 – School Photos - Oct. 22-23 – Parent/Teacher Conferences - Oct. 30 – PD Day – NO SCHOOL - Nov. 25 – Field Trip – Arts Commons Daily Challenge When we stick our tongues out between our teeth, it makes the "th" sound! Those were some great sorting lists you posted yesterday! We will share them on Monday, so feel free to add if you didn't yet get a chance. This morning we edited our message for missing vowels. We are getting better at remembering which vowel letters make which sounds! Here is a link for "Vowel Bat," which the students really enjoy! We shared some of our writing samples together with our neighbour class, and the grade ones had some "ketchup and must-do" time to work on various activities from the week. The students went on the laptops in French, and impressed both Mme. Pallesen and myself with their computer confidence and independence! One of our grade four buddy classes joined us for the grade one dance party, so it was extra fun! We finished our day with a discussion of the power of positive attitude, and started learning a new positive thinking song, "Don't Stop" (yes, the one by Fleetwood Mac). Have a great weekend! Wow! October already!? We exchanged and shared our library books, then practiced printing the bounce letters. This time we printed them on paper with pencils, and used play-doh to give clues and guess words that begin with each of the letters. The students were very excited for their weekly computer time! Today we learned how to get onto Raz Kids to read along. This is accessible from home on the school website (if you go to "Students --> For Students" there is a link, and the teacher username is esmorin). Raz Kids is a great resource to encourage extra home reading time independently! We will be adding passwords once the students are a little more comfortable with word processing, and I will send home a card with log-in information for multiple sites. In phys ed we learned about kicking with the instep of our foot, and trapping. We practiced in partners playing a game where we challenged ourselves to get further and further from our partners! In the afternoon the students rocked out with Pete the Cat in music class. We looked at more sorting sets, discussing which sets didn't belong. One of these things is not like the others! The students created their own sets in their math journals to try and stump Mathley. We wonder if he will be able to figure out which sets do not belong! We finished our day sharing a poetry party with our neighbour class. We read and acted out "Numbers, Numbers!" Mail Pockets - Field trip information notices went home with all students. For example: carrots, apples, broccoli, lettuce, milk, oranges, and celery. Hmm...which one doesn't fit my sorting guideline? |
Mrs. Morin and Ms. HilljeGrade one is my very favourite! I love the students' enthusiasm, creativity, and joy in learning. Archives
