This morning we visited our Sound City mural to check out the "Digraph Delivery" railroad -- digraphs are when 2 letters come together to make a brand new sound. This week we are focusing on /th/, which makes us stick out our tongues! We edited missing /th/ chunks in our morning message and took a first look at our new word wall additions. In printing we learned our last group of letters using gel bags, and played charades to reinforce the letter sounds. The "goofy" letters are called just that because they do not follow any of the other formation pattern rules! They include o, e, f, s, and u. We learned a new poem, "This and That," which is packed full of /th/ word wall words, and enjoyed teamwork parachute time in phys ed. In math we explored groups within a set of 7 dots, and used this to practice writing addition sentences. We showed 7 in many ways in our journals and practiced writing the numeral: "Across the sky and down from the heavens, that's the way to make a seven!" In the afternoon the students differentiated sounds and began learning about tempo in music. In science we discussed what a 'prediction' is, and made visual journal pages predicting what we will see on our upcoming fall ridge that is evidence of fall. After sharing a very cute story, "Leaves," we finished our day outside collecting beautiful autumn leaves for an art activity tomorrow.

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books! This week we are focused on the /th/ digraph.

Volunteer Opportunities:
- We will now instead visit Ridge for fall exploration and journal observations on Thursday, October 19, from 10:30 - 11:30 am. We would love to have 1 or 2 volunteers join us for some refreshing outside time!
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! This will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students.
- On Wednesday, November 8, Grade Ones will be visiting Fort Calgary for a special experience exploring an Aboriginal perspective of Alberta's history. We would appreciate 1 more volunteer to join us, please!
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
Please and Thank You!
- Please consider contributing used magazines for a down-the-road collage project exploring the colour wheel in science.
- We would appreciate pumpkin contributions for a pumpkin math inquiry the week of October 23. We only need 4 more pumpkins, and a variety of shapes and sizes are great! Please email Elysa if you would like to send one in with your child.
Halloween!
On Tuesday, October 31 students are welcome to attend school all day in costume, but we request that props be left at home. In the afternoon the grade ones will enjoy some extra fun learning activities, and a special snack. We are seeking volunteers to contribute items including a fruit plate, cheese/meat and crackers, and one treat. The veggie platter has been "claimed." :) Please email Elysa or Danielle if you would like to help with one of these snack items. Thank you!
Good to Know...
- Our weekly scheduled library exchange is Wednesday. Please return your books by then to exchange for a new selection.
- If interested, orders for the upcoming Little Caesar's fun lunch must be confirmed online by Friday, October 20.
Jacket Racket Coat Drive (Grade 6 Initiative)
Jacket Racket is a volunteer organization with the goal of ensuring that every child from Kindergarten to Grade 12 has a warm winter coat to wear to school. 90% of donations come from schools. The jackets are then distributed to children in schools where there is a need.
This year we are inviting our students and parents to participate in a coat drive for Jacket Racket. They accept gently used warm winter coats, snow pants, hats and mittens for all ages. Often whole families are outfitted, so any size is welcome. We encourage you to generously support this worthy project. Donations are accepted until November 1.

Daily Challenge
A prediction is kind of like a guess -- something you think you will observe. What do you predict you will observe on Thursday's ridge walk that is evidence (a sign) of fall?
