After editing our message for the week's /th/ words, we read and fed the words to our word wall. We watched a short video, "Austin's Butterfly," about the power of using peer feedback to make our work even better. We were excited to do our first Author's Chair -- we gave "stars" and "wishes" to improve our classmate's writing, then took the feedback to add and build upon our own squiggle stories from last week. The students were so into their writing, they wanted to continue working after our phys ed dance party! We finished our day with our first computer session -- the students were very patient as we learned how to log on to the computers and to Raz Kids.
If you would like to use Raz Kids to read at home, please click the "Links" section to find the Raz Kids icon. Once there, go to "Student Log-In" at the top of the page, and it will prompt you for the teacher username. Type "esmorin," then find your name within the class. Type your first name as your password.

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books! This week we are focused on the /th/ digraph.

Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! This will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students.
- On Wednesday, November 8, Grade Ones will be visiting Fort Calgary for a special experience exploring an Aboriginal perspective of Alberta's history. We would appreciate 1 more volunteer to join us, please!
- On Tuesday, November 14th the grade ones will be making bagged lunches for Calgary's working homeless population with the Sandwich Foundation. We are requesting 5 volunteers from 1:00 pm (until 2:45) to help with this extremely fun and meaningful experience!
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
Please and Thank You!
- Please consider contributing used magazines for a down-the-road collage project exploring the colour wheel in science.
- We would appreciate pumpkin contributions for a pumpkin math inquiry the week of October 23. We only need 4 more pumpkins, and a variety of shapes and sizes are great! Please email Elysa if you would like to send one in with your child.
Halloween!
On Tuesday, October 31 students are welcome to attend school all day in costume, but we request that props be left at home. In the afternoon the grade ones will enjoy some extra fun learning activities, and a special snack. We are seeking volunteers to contribute items -- items not yet claimed include a fruit plate, plates and napkins, and one treat. Please email Elysa or Danielle if you would like to help with one of these snack items. Thank you!

Daily Challenge
This week we are working with the "goofy" set of lowercase printed letters. They are called goofy because they don't follow any of the other letter formation patterns we learned! They include e, f, o, s, and u. Teach your family! Which is your favourite to print, and why? Which is the most challenging?
