We began our day learning 2 new spelling pattern chunks: ee and ea both make a squealy, long e sound. We added them to our Sound City mural, then edited for missing ee and ea in the morning message. We learned 2 new poems about colour, and read one more full of ee and ea! Then, we body spelled to guess, read, and "feed" our new word wall words. In phys ed we taught our kindergarten friends our fitness tag game. After recess we started our new round of literacy centers and guided reading, then in math we practiced looking for and representing chunks or groups we could subitize within a set. In the afternoon we shared a very cute colour book, "The Day the Crayons Quit," and made our primary colour mixing predictions. The students got to be waddling penguins in music, then we used cuisenaire rods to create and add up the value of "math-terpieces" with our grade 4 buddies. We finished our day with Mindful Monday, where all of the grade ones discussed and practiced caring for ourselves, to be better able to care for others. Just like on an airplane -- secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others!

Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! Just let me know the day before, please. This role will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students
- Our next field trip will be on Tuesday, January 16, visiting the Calgary Humane Society. We are requesting 2 more volunteers to join us that morning, please!
- Our next Fish Creek ridge walk will be (tentatively, weather dependent) Wednesday, January 24 at 12:30 pm. We would appreciate 3 volunteers joining us on this leisurely walk to observe seasonal winter changes.
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.

Daily Challenge
Practice subitizing and grouping at home! Grab a small handful of anything (from dried pasta to buttons to lego), place it on the floor, and look for groups you can subitize. What "chunks" do you see? How many are there all together when you add up the chunks?
