This morning we learned a new "trigraph" chunk (where 3 different letters combine to make one sound): /igh/. We edited for it in our message and learned a new poem full of -ight and -ite words. After a sharing circle, we wrote in our journals about what we wish we'd done on the weekend (which involved a lot of fabulous travel!), and what we actually did. We began basketball dribbling skills in phys ed and began a new round of literacy centers and guided reading, including hunting for 'igh' words. In the afternoon we played 2 'ten buddy' games to practice our facts, and showed how we visualize the ten buddy pairs with diagrams in our math journals. In science we learned about optical illusions, and how our brain likes to take shortcuts when it can, which is why our sense of sight can trick us! We loved creating our own optical illusions, thaumatropes, which actually work the same way as cartoon animation!
If you'd like to create your own at home, here is a great website explaining how to make it and why it works:

PoWer Hour Showcase
Families are invited to share in the learning and unique opportunities of this round of PoWer Hour. Showcase begins at 2:30. [This will allow each PoWer Hour sessions to get in, started and working before visitors arrive.]
Please and Thank You
- We will be visiting Telus Spark on Monday, March 13 and Wednesday, March 15. We would really appreciate a couple more volunteers for each of those days! Thank you for considering!
-Rekenreks are an excellent manipulative, visual math tool that help children develop efficient and flexible number sense. The students are excited to craft their own in upcoming weeks! If you have some available, please send in large(ish), flat pieces of cardboard. The fronts and backs of cereal boxes are perfect for this. Thank you for your help with our math crafting!

Screenagers - Growing Up In The Digital Age
With Panel Discussion Following the Movie Screening
Please join us as we learn more about the digital world and how it affects our families. This filmmaker and physician learned that the average child spends 6.5 hours daily on various screens. The film questions what effects this has and explores family struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Our panel of experts will be able to share some best practices with us and lead us in some discussion after the film. (Panel experts are Cybercrime Education Officer Cst Carter Duchesney with Cst Jan Staneke, Psychologist Danelle Spence, and Jr. High School Principal Darrin Whitbread.)
When: Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Daily Challenge
We learned about how our sense of sight can play tricks on us because our brain has to work so fast to see images, it likes to take short cuts and make estimates or predictions when it can. Can you look up optical illusions online? Post a link to your favourite!
