This morning we learned a new spelling chunk: -igh makes a long /i/ sound. We edited for it, and as compared to -ite, in our morning message. We read our new "Zite and My Kite" poem, and distinguished the 'ite' and 'ight' words with goofy body actions. We are so lucky to have the One World drumming residency this week! We had our first session today with Mr. K, and learned some basic techniques and patterns on the West African djembes. In phys ed we played body awareness and movement games. After recess we began our new round of literacy centers and guided reading, and discussed how our senses keep us safe in science. We began our afternoon with math; we started learning about 'doubles,' and used an addition table to show doubles sums. We had some more doubles practice with our grade 4 buddies playing a connect-4 style game, "Double Trouble." In music and at the end of the day, we practiced our pieces for the upcoming concert. It is going to be awesome!

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books! This week we are focusing on "igh' and comparing it to "ite."

Drumming Residency Sharing Time
The kindergartens, grade ones, and grade fours will benefit from an exciting drumming residency this week! We will be sharing what we have learned Friday morning, and families are welcome to come watch. The sharing time is from 8:00 to 8:45 in the gym.
Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! Just let me know the day before, please. This role will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
