Wow...hard to believe it is already the last week of September! This morning the students were very excited to get a new writing tool -- their own "offices," with personal word walls on them. We talked about how it's okay not to know how to spell all words perfectly right away. Just like babies learn to speak by first using the sounds they can easily make (such as saying "baba" for "bottle,"), kids become good writers by first trying to spell words with the sounds they know and can hear. We will learn lots of spelling patterns and familiar words this year that help us get better and better at it! The children did an absolutely awesome using their new tools and best "kid spelling" to write and share in their journals. Well done! After recess we showed eight as many different ways as we could in our math journals. Remember: Make an 's' and then don't wait...climb up again to make an 8! In the afternoon we explored the many different lines artists can make in our visual journals. We had fun giving them names and sounds! We learned that artists use line, shape, and colour to express ideas. Just like Kandinsky, we expressed what we heard, depicting a piece of music ("We Bought a Zoo" by Jonsi) with oil pastels. So many beautiful and different interpretations! The students had fun learning a song about Pete the Cat's school shoes, and we finished our day sharing a poetry party with our neighbour class. We learned a song to help us remember the short vowel sounds!

Please and Thank You
- Fun Lunches begin soon in October! If you are interested in ordering for your child and have not already done so, please visit www.healthyhunger.ca to register and order.
- Please return all school forms, volunteer forms, and coupon book packages (whether ordering or not) at your earliest convenience.
- If you have spare phonebooks at home, please consider sending them in (ideally, two stacked together and wrapped in duct tape, please and thank you!). We use these as a tool for children's seated posture, as many of the students' feet don't yet reach the ground in grade one.

Daily Challenge
We learned a song to help us remember the short vowels, a (fat cat!), e (jelly egg), i (big pig!), o (hot pot!), and u (skunk bump!) Which is your favourite short vowel, and why? Can you write a silly sentence with lots of words using that short vowel?
