This morning we learned a new group of letters to print -- half-moon letters. They all start with a half-moon c, and travel to and from the moon! We tried printing them in our gel bags. We exchanged our library books and I was so proud of how respectfully and quietly the students shared their books. After recess we showed 3 as many ways as we could in our math journals. Our rhyme to remember how to write a three is: around a tree, around a tree, that's the way to make a three! Before lunch we took another look at our shoes...this time observing and drawing someone else's shoe! I am so impressed with the careful details the students captured! The students loved playing an animal game in phys ed with Mr. D., Miss Gilbank's substitute. In the afternoon we discussed what "mindfulness" means. We decided it means using our whole brains and our senses to think about what is going on in our minds and our bodies. One of our classmates pointed out that it's related to concentration and focus, too. We explored mindfulness by tasting grapes! First we drew a grape, then ate it, just like normal. With the second grape, we carefully studied it using each of our senses one at a time....and amazingly, that made the grape taste SO much "sweeter, juicier, sour-er, sugary, and yummier" (to name a few descriptors). We reviewed yesterday's poem and searched for repeating words using body actions, then fed those useful words to our word wall monster. Having carefully observed shoes, we finished our day with a whole class shoe sort. We talked about what "attributes" are, and began to make a sorting tree map on our carpet. There were so many different attributes to choose from! Our daily challenge is about sorting...
Mail Pockets
No new notices were sent home, so mail pockets remained at school.
Please and Thank You
- Please return all school forms, volunteer forms, and coupon book packages (whether ordering or not) at your earliest convenience.
- If you have spare phonebooks at home, please consider sending them in (ideally, two stacked together and wrapped in duct tape, please and thank you!). We use these as a tool for children's seated posture, as many of the students' feet don't yet reach the ground in grade one.
Volunteer Opportunities
- Folding and assembling pizza boxes as art portfolios (later in the week, or next week)
- Writing student computer ID numbers on headphone bags (would need to be done at school)
Library Books
Our class visits the Learning Commons on Wednesday mornings. If your child would like to exchange their current book for a new one, please return by Wednesday.

Daily Challenge
We really enjoyed sorting our class shoes today! Why is sorting important and useful? What is something you sort, or would like to sort? What attributes could you sort by?
