This morning for our daily "How Many Ways," we drew dot arrangements of 11 to find the different ways we could subitize and show groups within it. We enjoyed a science experiment to learn how the senses of smell and taste work together. We tried tasting samples with and without a plugged nose to guess what they were. Jicama was a tricky one -- when our noses were plugged, it was very similar to the apple! We learned about the sense receptors in our noses (and other sense organs) that send messages to our brains about what we are sensing, and acted it out with a hand squeeze train. After literacy centers, the grade ones learned about chest passes and bounce passes in Netball, and practiced these skills with a fun relay game, Peel the Banana. In the afternoon the students learned some new songs in French, then worked on their Urban/Rural optical illusion artwork. We finished our day with a grade one 'superstorm' (when all of the classes come together) to learn about an exciting new project: designing and building a community!
Friendly reminder...tomorrow is both Fun Lunch (Opa) and Stop, Drop, and Read Day!
Mail Pockets
- Notices (small strips) for Spring Photo Day (next Wednesday, April 20)
Stop, Drop, and Read
Bring a stuffy tomorrow and a good book. Listen for stop and read times. We will also be having a teacher exchange where teachers read to different classes.
Planning for 2016-17 (School Council Meeting Thursday, April 14!)
We are just starting the process of organizing for the 2016-17 school year. This is a long process that starts with the system budget, which we received yesterday. We have worked closely as a staff to come up with some possible scenarios that we can afford given our funding and our projected student enrollment. We can have anything we want but we can’t have everything we want! At the School Council meeting Thursday, April 14 we will be sharing possible scenarios and seeking feedback about what parents value (French in Div I, Power Hour, Class Size, Maintaining straight grades (vs. blended grades), Idea Lab). If you would like to have input, please join us at the Council Meeting. Due to tight timelines this will be the only forum to provide input.
Student-Led Conferences
Student led conferences will be held on April 21 and 22.
System opens April 11th - Please use the My CBE Account to book a 15 minute interview. Plan to spend 30 minutes before or after your scheduled time with your child leading you through their learning.
April 21st 4:00pm to 8:00pm
April 22nd 8:00am to 12:30pm – No School

Daily Challenge
We did an experiment and watched a short video to learn about how our senses of taste and smell are connected. We sampled apple and jicama, which are pretty similar if you can't use your nose to help your tongue! Can you think of any other foods that might taste similar without the help of your sense of smell?
