This morning we learned a new spelling pattern: when o comes first, u and w get jealous and pinch him, making him say, "OW! OU!" We edited the missing ou/ow chunks in our morning message and read our new (and rather long!) OW/OU Storm poem. We made up actions to highlight every time we read an ou or ow word, and there were loads! Whew! In math we played a game with ten frames and dice to practice subtracting with ten buddies, and worked on trying alternate solutions to our Olympic snowboarding ten buddies problem. We had literacy centers and guided reading, and played a fun partner tag in phys ed to practice passing skills. Our afternoon was full of science! We learned about our sense of touch, and how some parts of the body are more sensitive with touch receptors. We used our observation skills with mystery feeling bags. All of the grade ones got together to learn how our sense of hearing works, and began observing mystery sound samples.
We are excited for the 100th day of school tomorrow! Thank you in advance for your 100th Day trail mix contributions!

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books! This week we are focusing on "ow" and "ou" (pinchy) pattern chunks.

*Hundredth Day of School*
Can you believe February 21 will be the hundredth day of school!? That went fast! We will be concocting 100th Day Trail Mix, among many other hundred-themed activities, to celebrate. We ask that students please bring in a small-sized, non-nut snack item to contribute (roughly 2 or 3 cups should be perfect), as well as an egg carton cut down to 10 cups (serving as a ten frame) if possible. Students will measure out ten pieces of ten different snacks to enjoy a trail mix of exactly 100! Thank you so much for your help and contributions. The students love to be math chefs!
Some ideas for ingredients include, but are not limited to:
- mini pretzels
- pumpkin seeds
- raisins
- dried cranberries or other dried fruits
- banana chips
- goldfish crackers
- larger sized breakfast cereals (like shreddies or corn bran)
- dry roasted beans or peas
- puffed wheat
- corn nuts
- popcorn
- yogurt chips
- bagel crisps
Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! Just let me know the day before, please. This role will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students
-We are seeking 2-3 more volunteers to join us for a fun, educational, and outdoorsy day at the Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre on Thursday, March 1.
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
Pink Shirt Day
February 28th is Pink Shirt Day. Wear a pink shirt in support of anti-bullying. This year, Pink Shirt Day is encouraging others to combat cyberbullying by thinking twice before posting something negative, and instead using the internet to spread kindness - because we know that Nice Needs No Filter!
At Prince of Wales the grade 4s will host an assembly at 8:30. Families welcome.
