This morning the students had Ms. Streeter in while I was at a doctor's appointment. They worked on their winter ridge walk predictions, and set up their 4-sense observations page for this afternoon. They were very lucky to get the gym all to themselves for Mission Impossible today! They hunted for rhymes in their "Bossy R Pirate" song, and had literacy centers and guided reading. In math they practiced comparing numbers using "more than, fewer than, and as many/equal to" by building and comparing towers with as many cubes as a a number they rolled. This afternoon the students did a beautiful job in music learning pieces for March's upcoming school concert, and we spent the rest of our day enjoying the sunny winter weather and observing seasonal changes at the ridge! Thank you to our volunteers for joining us!

Family Tradition Recipes
Please talk with your child about a recipe that is a tradition in your family -- it could be cultural, seasonal, passed down through generations, or just something special to/enjoyed by your family! We are exploring family recipes as a social studies-based writing project and with a well-known local cookbook author over the next two weeks, culminating in a Family Traditions Brunch on February 9th (8:00 am). We have done some initial reflection and journaling in class, but please send your child to school with a copy of their recipe for next Monday, January 29th.
Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! Just let me know the day before, please. This role will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students
- Due to an exciting guest speaker opportunity, our next Fish Creek ridge walk will be moved (tentatively, weather dependent) to Tuesday, January 23 at 1:00 pm. We would appreciate 3 volunteers joining us on this leisurely walk to observe seasonal winter changes.
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
Save the Date:
Grade one will be enjoying a Family Traditions Brunch on Friday, February 9 at 8:00 am. Families are welcome to attend! Please see recipe information above to help your child prepare toward this project.

Also, what questions would you like to ask our expert Julie about writing recipes and cookbooks?
