This morning we had art with Mrs. Ferrari. We began learning about tints and shades with today's art project: to make a colour lighter (tint), we add white, and to make it darker (shade), we add black. Afterward we edited our message for missing ee and ea chunks, and played Germ Tag in phys ed. After recess we shared another cute colour book, "Red: A Crayon's Story," and had literacy centers and guided reading. We did some edible math with raisins to reinforce subtraction and practice showing it in number sentences. In the afternoon the students did a snowflake song in music, then it was science time. We finished our primary colour mixing predictions, and tested them out by swirling drops of food colouring in shaving cream, which we transfer printed onto paper as observation samples. It was messy and very fun! We watched 2 short videos that introduced us to the colour wheel -- now we understand that primary colours mixing to create secondary colours is the reason the colour wheel is in its particular order. We are excited to make our own collage colour wheels thsi week! We finished our day with more math, looking for "chunks" we could subitize in a set of items and representing how to add them up with number sentences.

Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! Just let me know the day before, please. This role will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students
- Our next field trip will be on Tuesday, January 16, visiting the Calgary Humane Society. We are requesting 2 more volunteers to join us that morning, please!
- Our next Fish Creek ridge walk will be (tentatively, weather dependent) Wednesday, January 24 at 12:30 pm. We would appreciate 3 volunteers joining us on this leisurely walk to observe seasonal winter changes.
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
Please and Thank You!

After making your predictions, were you surprised by any primary colour combinations? What was new or surprising for you? What is a colour you would like to learn to make, and how do you think you might mix it?
