This morning we had an extra challenge in our morning message -- all of our word wall words were completely blank spaces, and we had to think about what would sound right and make sense in each spot to edit. The students did a great job of this! We took a little break to get our school photos taken, then explored punctuation in our "All of Us" poem. Using sound effects and actions, we learned that a period means "stop," a comma is a little pause or breath, and an uppercase letter is at the start of a new sentence. We were extra excited for printing today because we got to choose a play-doh colour to keep in our desks! We learned a song to help us with good pencil grip and practiced our flagpole letters on paper today. After each letter, we used play-doh to build something beginning with that letter sound, and tried to guess each other's creations. In the afternoon we noticed that cloudy, partly cloudy, and rainy are now equal on our weather graph -- we are working on comparative math language including equal, greater, and less. We brainstormed as many ways as we could to show 8 since it is the 8th day of school, and showed how many numbers we already know how to write on a hundreds chart. After music we shared, "Only One You," then finished our day with a little free center time.

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a small set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Often there will be a focus of a specific phonic pattern. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books!
you to and the can day of
"Thinking Gum"
Chewing gum is recommended by occupational therapists as a beneficial tool for children during intensive focus tasks, such as writing. I bring in (sugar-free) "thinking gum" for students to use during focused writing times, and we discuss the rules for using it effectively as a tool. Please let me know via email if you would prefer your child not to partake in this. Thank you!
