This morning we edited our message for missing ou/ow words and "traded" for another group of ten since it was our 130th counted day of school. We had guided and small group reading time, then did a class word sort with the two sounds of /ow/ (long o and 'pinchy.') We highlighted all of the ou/ow words in our poem, and there were a lot! The students continued working on their Public Service Announcement posters for Earth day, then tried out some new skipping skills in phys ed. In math we used our rekenreks to practice a "trick" for adding near-doubles easily: when you need to add a doubles plus one set of addends (like 7+6, for example), double the lower number, then add one more. It also worked to double the greater number and subtract one less. In the afternoon the students had French, then we set off to make our community a cleaner place on our litter pick-up. The students had a lot of fun using litter sticks and we were quite astounded at how much we picked up between the school and Park 96. Thank you so much to our wonderful, patient volunteers!

Litter Clean-Up Tomorrow! (April 20)
We are looking forward to helping the animals and environment in our community with our pre-Earth Day Litter Cleanup tomorrow! We will provide bags and litter sticks, but ask that students come in comfortable clothes that are okay to get messy. If you have gardening gloves to send, that would be great! Thank you!
Please and Thank You
-A huge thank you to our Litter Pick-up volunteers! We really appreciated you giving your time and patience to make it such a great afternoon of helping.
- Grade One will enjoy observing spring seasonal changes on our next Ridge Walk Thursday, May 4 at 1:30. We would appreciate one or two more volunteers, please.
- Our class will visit the Calgary Drop-In Centre on Thursday, May 11 to learn about how our city supports its vulnerable citizens, and to volunteer sorting donations. We will also enjoy exploring nearby Patrick's Island via the Riverwalk that afternoon. We would appreciate 5 volunteers to come with us.
- While we realize June 14 is further down the road, we are hoping to have 8 - 10 of our fabulous volunteers join us on our Urban Community Tour. This exciting day exploring Calgary's landmarks and local history is made much smoother with a small adult-child ratio, and is always one of the most memorable highlights of the grade ones' year. We hope you can come with us! :)
Thank you for being so giving of your time! Please email Elysa or Melissa if you are interested and available for any of these experiences.
Math Facts
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, near-doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!?
Communities helping Communities
Grade 2’s have been learning about communities across Canada. As we explored ways of life in the Arctic, we were shocked to learn that a fire had devastated the community school in Kugaaruk, Nunavut. Not just a center for education, the school served as the community center with the arena, breakfast and lunch program, and special events. Grade 2’s at Prince of Wales have banded together, and following the design thinking process, explored how to best support this community.
Cash donations will be accepted from April 3rd to April 21st. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. We thank you in advance for your support!
