This morning we began our day peacefully continuing our lines art project with Mrs. Ferrari. They are looking lovely! After we edited the fully missing /wh/ words from our message, and enjoyed large apparatus gymnastics time in phys ed. After recess we began sharing a book about family food traditions, "Everybody Serves Soup," and looked at some recipes on next week's guest speaker's blog -- we noticed she tells stories with her recipes. We had literacy centers and guided reading, then hunted for rhyming pairs and punctuation in our "All About You" poem. In the afternoon we enjoyed a funny book about the 5 senses -- "You Can't Taste a Pickle With Your Ear" -- and made visual journal pages about our favourite things to sense. We learned that the body parts which execute the function of each sense are called "organs," and that skin is the largest organ in the human body! The students did a fabulous job in music reviewing what they had learned about Chinese New Year. We finished our day practicing our one more, one less, two more, and two less facts in math with a game.

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books! This week we are focusing on "whispery wh:"
how who what when where why which
Please and Thank You!
- Thank you for returning school Library books for Wednesday (our scheduled weekly exchange time is Wednesday afternoon).
- Please start thinking about a recipe that is a tradition in your family (could be cultural, or just something special to/enjoyed by your family). Next week we will start working toward recipe writing!
Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! Just let me know the day before, please. This role will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students
- Due to an exciting guest speaker opportunity, our next Fish Creek ridge walk will be moved (tentatively, weather dependent) to Tuesday, January 23 at 1:00 pm. We would appreciate 3 volunteers joining us on this leisurely walk to observe seasonal winter changes.
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
