This morning -- the tenth day of school -- we got to do business with our daily numbers! We traded our ten little baby ones (units) for one big ten stick (rod) in our place value pockets. We really enjoyed printing practice with our fingers in salt! We reviewed how to write the flagpole group of letters, and played with their letter sounds. In our math journals, we showed number two as many different ways as we could, from tallies, pictures and ten frames, to numerals and words. Remember: To draw a two, go right around...then make a line across the ground! We spent some time discussing what it means to "observe" something. We know that it is an important thing for scientists and artists to do. We each took off one shoe and carefully observed it, drawing what we saw and felt in our visual journals. We noticed some details that we hadn't caught before! The students played "Captain's Coming", "Red Elbow," and a new favourite, "Pickle" in phys ed. In the afternoon the students reviewed numbers in French (they love playing Four Corners!), and we got a new poem, "I Like, I Can." This poem is full of helpful words that we use a lot...we are going to feed some of them to our Word Wall Monster! After hunting for and underlining colour words in the poem, we finished our day with some organization/'ketchup' time.
*Please remember, we exchange our library books tomorrow!
Also, we will be tasting grapes tomorrow as part of a health and science activity. Please let me know if there are allergy concerns with grapes.
Mail Pockets
No new notices were sent home, so mail pockets remained at school.
Please and Thank You
- Please return all school forms, volunteer forms, and coupon book packages (whether ordering or not) at your earliest convenience.
- If you have spare phonebooks at home, please consider sending them in (ideally, two stacked together and wrapped in duct tape, please and thank you!). We use these as a tool for children's seated posture, as many of the students' feet don't yet reach the ground in grade one.
Volunteer Opportunities
- We need at least 1 more volunteer for the Terry Fox Run Friday morning, if possible!
- Folding and assembling pizza boxes as art portfolios (later in the week, or next week)
- Writing student computer ID numbers on headphone bags (would need to be done at school)
Library Books
Our class visits the Learning Commons on Wednesday mornings. If your child would like to exchange their current book for a new one, please return by Wednesday.

Daily Challenge
We talked about observing today, and carefully observed our shoes in our visual journals. We use our senses to find out details that help us understand what we are observing. When would it be useful and important to be a good observer? What is something you would be interested to observe?
