Did you know that November 20 is the UN-designated day to promote children's welfare are awareness? We spent the majority of our afternoon learning about "rights," and specifically the universal rights of the child. We shared a beautiful book, "I Have the Right to Be a Child" with our grade 4 buddies and discussed what we felt were the most important rights for governments to protect, and the grade ones did a lovely job expressing what they felt were the most important rights in their visual journals. Earlier in the day we learned a new phonic chunk for our Sound City "digraph delivery railroad" -- sh! After editing for it in our morning message, we searched for /sh/ words as part of our literacy centers and guided reading. In math we worked again with cuisenaire rods, but this time we assigned number values to them. We played with visually building equalities, and expressing them with addition and subtraction sentences. In phys ed we practiced hockey stick handling and shooting skills, and the students finished their gorgeous warm/cool repeating pattern art before lunch.

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books! This week we are focused on the /sh/ digraph.

Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! Just let me know the day before, please. This role will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students
- A take home opportunity: please let me know if you would like to sort and assemble Scholastic reading flyers for November/December.
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
Please and Thank You!
- Thank you for sending in magazines for our upcoming collaged colour wheels in science!
- Please return any yellow poetry duotangs that may have been left at home (we are missing a few!)

Daily Challenge
We spent a good portion of our day learning and talking about the universal rights of all children. We learned that, sadly, these rights are not actually granted everywhere in the world. What do you think is the most important right all children should have, and why?
