This morning we edited our message for wacky "wh" spellings and backward letters. We hunted for word wall words in our poem by making actions for the most frequent words (which was fun but exhausting...it was packed with 'wh' words and "you!"). We had literacy centers and guided reading, then we were treated to the gym and gymnastics all to ourselves for phys ed! After recess we learned about making our writing into a sandwich -- with a beginning "top bun", lots of tasty details in the middle, and an end "bottom bun" to hold it all together. The students used their "wh" question to write interviews to me in their journals. In the afternoon we exchanged our library books, and worked on our "two less" facts in math with different partner and group games. After sharing a very cute award winning book, "The Unimaginary Friend," we finished our day with some 'ketchup/must-do' time to get organized.

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books! This week we are focusing on "whispery wh:"
how who what when where why which
Please and Thank You!
- Thank you for returning school Library books for Wednesday (our scheduled weekly exchange time is Wednesday afternoon).
- Please start thinking about a recipe that is a tradition in your family (could be cultural, or just something special to/enjoyed by your family). More info to come!
Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! Just let me know the day before, please. This role will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students
- Due to an exciting guest speaker opportunity, our next Fish Creek ridge walk will be moved (tentatively, weather dependent) to Tuesday, January 23 at 1:00 pm. We would appreciate 3 volunteers joining us on this leisurely walk to observe seasonal winter changes.
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.

Grade one will be enjoying a Family Traditions Brunch on Friday, February 9. Families are welcome to attend! More information to come soon!
