This morning we edited our message for wacky 'or' and 'ar' words, and figured out with the hundreds chart that we only have 17 more days until the 100th day of school! We had literacy centers and guided reading, and brainstormed other ar/or words to sing in our "Bossy R Pirate" song. We had the gym all to ourselves for Mission Impossible again -- what a treat! After recess we began sharing the book, "Everybody Brings Noodles," and wrote in our journals about our family recipes. The students wrote to persuade us why we should try making their recipe in class! In the afternoon we exchanged our library books, and had a very special guest speaker for the rest of the afternoon! Cookbook author and food writer Julie Van Rosendaal did a great job teaching the students about cookbook features, like the index, and a variety of cooking tools. We are excited to compose our grade 1 cookbook!

Family Tradition Recipes
Please talk with your child about a recipe that is a tradition in your family -- it could be cultural, seasonal, passed down through generations, or just something special to/enjoyed by your family! We are exploring family recipes as a social studies-based writing project and with a well-known local cookbook author over the next two weeks, culminating in a Family Traditions Brunch on February 9th (8:00 am). We have done some initial reflection and journaling in class, but please send your child to school with a copy of their recipe for next Monday, January 29th.
Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! Just let me know the day before, please. This role will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students
- Take home volunteer opportunity: Scholastic order flyers can be sent home if you are interested in sorting and assembling. Thanks!
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
Save the Date:
Grade one will be enjoying a Family Traditions Brunch on Friday, February 9 at 8:00 am. Families are welcome to attend! Please see recipe information above to help your child prepare toward this project.
