After editing our very wacky message full of backward letters and funky vowels, we began our day with Author's Chair to review our writing target. We worked in small group to give each other helpful feedback, which the students used to edit or add to their Easter weekend writing. After recess both grade one classes examined and discussed some rural and urban images, comparing them and making connections. We had a blast with the long ropes in skipping, then used our rekenreks to reinforce 'near-doubles' facts in math. In the afternoon the students had music, then both classes met up again for some science, preparing for tomorrow's Pre-Earth Day cleanup. We learned and sang a new song, "Rockin' With the Three R's" (reduce, reuse, recycle), and read "Uno's Garden," a beautiful book about what can happen to the land when it is overused. We finished our day creating P.S.A. posters in our visual journals with messages about doing our part to help the Earth.

Litter Clean-Up Tomorrow! (April 20)
We are looking forward to helping the animals and environment in our community with our pre-Earth Day Litter Cleanup tomorrow! We will provide bags and litter sticks, but ask that students come in comfortable clothes that are okay to get messy. If you have gardening gloves to send, that would be great! Thank you!
Please and Thank You
-Grade One is helping care for their community with a pre-Earth Day Litter Cleanup on Thursday, April 20th at 1:30. We would appreciate 1 or 2 more volunteers to join us for this.
- Grade One will enjoy observing spring seasonal changes on our next Ridge Walk Thursday, May 4 at 1:30.
- Our class will visit the Calgary Drop-In Centre on Thursday, May 11 to learn about how our city supports its vulnerable citizens, and to volunteer sorting donations. We will also enjoy exploring nearby Patrick's Island via the Riverwalk that afternoon. We would appreciate 5 volunteers to come with us.
- While we realize June 14 is further down the road, we are hoping to have 8 - 10 of our fabulous volunteers join us on our Urban Community Tour. This exciting day exploring Calgary's landmarks and local history is made much smoother with a small adult-child ratio, and is always one of the most memorable highlights of the grade ones' year. We hope you can come with us! :)
Thank you for being so giving of your time! Please email Elysa or Melissa if you are interested and available for any of these experiences.
Math Facts
When we play fact fluency games in class, we are currently reviewing doubles, near-doubles, "ten buddies," one more (+1) and one less (-1) facts. Please feel free to review these at home! It can be a fun way to pass time during car rides or waiting in line, and you can use simple items like dice or playing cards to make a game of it. For example, roll the die or take a card -- what is that card's "ten buddy?" What is one more or one less? What is the double of that number? How fast can you go!?
Communities helping Communities
Grade 2’s have been learning about communities across Canada. As we explored ways of life in the Arctic, we were shocked to learn that a fire had devastated the community school in Kugaaruk, Nunavut. Not just a center for education, the school served as the community center with the arena, breakfast and lunch program, and special events. Grade 2’s at Prince of Wales have banded together, and following the design thinking process, explored how to best support this community.
To support Kugaaruk School, Grade 2’s will host Intermural Floor Hockey in the gym from April 10th- April 20th from12:00-12:30PM and welcome all donations (suggested donation is $2). Ms. Konno will be creating heartfelt cards with students in Room 9. The Grade 2’s also welcome cash donations in support of the community of Kugaaruk. **Grade one intermural hockey is on Monday, April 10th.**
Cash donations will be accepted from April 3rd to April 21st. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. We thank you in advance for your support!
