We edited our very wacky message to make our /th/ word wall words sounds right again! Afterward we used our word family posters to test out the /th/ digraph, deciding if it created a real word, or a nonsense word, with each end chunk family. The silliest sounding word we built was "thog!" We printed our goofy letters in salt plates, and acted out words starting with each of the sounds. After recess we had a treat -- we went on an Autumn Observation scavenger hunt outside with our grade 4 buddies, and had a great time. We learned from them that the birch bark was used as natural sunscreen by Blackfoot people, and found many fascinating pieces of fall evidence. In the afternoon we exchanged our library books and explored different ways to show, make and break 8. "Make an 's' and then don't wait...climb up again to make an eight!" We finished our day with art. We learned about observational drawing, and like scientists, carefully drew the lovely autumn leaves we had collected yesterday. We also explored leaf rubbing on the other side of our visual journal pages. It was fun!

Words of the Week
Each week we will focus on a set of high frequency words that we are using in our poems and morning message. Feel free to practice these and look for them in your own books! This week we are focused on the /th/ digraph.

Volunteer Opportunities:
- We will now instead visit Ridge for fall exploration and journal observations on Thursday, October 19, from 10:30 - 11:30 am. We would love to have 1 or 2 volunteers join us for some refreshing outside time!
- We would love to welcome morning literacy volunteers into our classroom from 8:00 to 8:30 each morning. If there is one morning a week that works for you, wonderful, but drop-ins are always welcome, too! This will involve helping to create sight word rings, as well as reading one-on-one with students.
- On Wednesday, November 8, Grade Ones will be visiting Fort Calgary for a special experience exploring an Aboriginal perspective of Alberta's history. We would appreciate 1 more volunteer to join us, please!
Thank you very much for considering! Please email Elysa ([email protected]) or Danielle ([email protected]) if interested to confirm your availability.
Please and Thank You!
- Please consider contributing used magazines for a down-the-road collage project exploring the colour wheel in science.
- We would appreciate pumpkin contributions for a pumpkin math inquiry the week of October 23. We only need 4 more pumpkins, and a variety of shapes and sizes are great! Please email Elysa if you would like to send one in with your child.
Halloween!
On Tuesday, October 31 students are welcome to attend school all day in costume, but we request that props be left at home. In the afternoon the grade ones will enjoy some extra fun learning activities, and a special snack. We are seeking volunteers to contribute items -- items not yet claimed include a fruit plate, plates and napkins, and one treat. Please email Elysa or Danielle if you would like to help with one of these snack items. Thank you!

Daily Challenge
This week we are working with the "goofy" set of lowercase printed letters. They are called goofy because they don't follow any of the other letter formation patterns we learned! They include e, f, o, s, and u. Teach your family! Which is your favourite to print, and why? Which is the most challenging?
