This morning the grade ones did a remarkable job practicing their mountain letters, this time on paper, and had fun playing charades to review the letter sounds they make. Afterward we went to the book fair and the students wrote down wish lists (which they know does not necessarily mean they will buy those books!) of books that interested them. In science we practiced our observation skills, drawing leaves we had collected in great detail in our visual journals. The students wrote beside their observation drawings what they thought they knew about leaves, and what they wondered. We sang and acted our "Dance of the Little Leaf" poem, then wrote our own leaf action words. After PoWer Hour in the afternoon, the grade ones combined their dancing leaf action words with the gorgeous, colourful coffee filter leaves they made using only primary colours to create a beautiful, blustery autumn sky full of leaves!
Room 7 Communication / Contact
Our classroom coordinator this year is Tara Walter. She will help to coordinate volunteers and contributors for in-school events and field trips. If you would like to be added to her contact list in order to receive class updates with upcoming date reminders and volunteer opportunities, please email Tara at [email protected] with your preferred email contact information.
Mail Pockets
- no new notices went home, so mail pockets stayed at school
- Book fair wish lists went home in backpacks
- Home Reading bags went home if returned
Please and Thank You
- Thank you to those who have offered to contribute pumpkins for our Pumpkin Math inquiry next week! We will begin our first related activity on Monday.
- Please consider contributing a healthy treat for next Thursday afternoon, where we will be enjoying a Halloween celebration! (See below)
Halloween
Next Thursday, the 29th, students are invited to dress in costume for the afternoon. We will be enjoying fun activities to celebrate Halloween in our classroom. If you would like to help contribute a special snack, we are looking for healthy treats, including fruits and vegetables, crackers, cheese/meat, and one "treat" treat is okay, too! Please email myself or Tara if interested, and feel free to email me with any questions as well. Thank you!
Volunteer Opportunities
- I am seeking morning reading volunteers for Monday through Thursday from 8:30-9:00. The students benefit so much from a little extra one-on-one reading time each week, building confidence and a love of reading! This volunteer time may also include supporting letter-sound review, as well as sharing "just right" books. If interested, please email myself ([email protected]) or Tara ([email protected]) with the weekday(s) that works best for you! Thanks very much!
Library Exchange
This week we did not have library exchange because of the book fair, which our class was scheduled to visit during our usual exchange time, Wednesday morning. You can still return your books!
Upcoming Dates
- Oct. 22-23 – Parent/Teacher Conferences; Scholastic Book Fair!
- Oct. 30 – PD Day – NO SCHOOL
- Nov. 25 – Field Trip – Arts Commons
Daily Challenge
The grade ones are becoming fabulous printers, and it is showing in their journal writing, too! We have been focusing on the "mountain letters" this week: v, w, x, y, and z. Can you teach your family how to print them? Which is your favourite to print, and why?
